Family Science Night |
An exciting and fun night of science for the whole family was held at the Bald Eagle Area Middle-High School on Friday, April 12, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Activities took place in the Middle-High School gymnasium, lobby, auditorium, and Large Group Instruction Room.
Entire families had the opportunity to watch Solar Cars and Robotics presentations from the Middle/High School students, view an elementary poster Science display depicting what students are learning in science classes now, and participate in 8-10 astronomy activities provided by Penn State University students. Mrs. Carol Tancibok, BEA guidance counselor and amateur astronomer, provided an informative presentation on NASA's Mars rover Curiosity.
Families also viewed an amazing 43-minute IMAX movie on BEA’s new 32-foot screen in the auditorium. The Hubble: IMAX, narrated by Leonardo DeCaprio, chronicles the effort of 7 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. The film's goal is to make viewers feel as though they are voyaging through the cosmos, seeing through Hubble’s eyes, and peering over the shoulders of astronauts as they work on the telescope – providing a closeness and understanding of the universe beyond the reach of still images.
THANKS to everyone involved with Science Night, and a special thanks to BEA alum Dennis Showers, BEA Class of ’71, and his wife Emily, for donating $500 to the Eagle Ambassadors Wish List to help sponsor Family Science Night. |

Engaged Learning at Port Matilda Elementary |
As a culminating activity to a Fractured Fairy Tale unit, third graders at Port Matilda Elementary had a Hawaiian Luau. This activity was based on the reading of The 3 Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark by Donivee Laird. Students packed their suitcases and took an imaginary trip to the glistening beaches of the tropics. Before leaving for this imaginary trip, students checked their budgets to see what types of activities they could afford, and then calculated how many exciting adventures they could fit into a day on the islands. Students brought home souvenirs that they had collected, such as sunglasses, seashells, poetry and leis.
During the day students also studied the island geography, watched a fun movie about a Hawaiian family, relaxed with some peaceful beach reading, and learned some Hawaiian words. Mahalo (thank you) to all of the makua (parents) who sent in ono (delicious) treats for the adventure and also to Miss Abby Dwyer, for teaching the students to hula dance. Port Matilda third-grade students in Mrs. Sharkey's class also enjoyed a "Pirate Day" in February to celebrate achieving an average of 18.5 Accelerated Reader points per student in a recent reading competition. Art, Reading, and Technology were integrated into the educational and fun dress-up day.

Mr. Jeff Miles named Superintendent of Schools |
At their December 6, 2012 meeting, the Bald Eagle Area School District Board of Education appointed Jeffrey D. Miles as the new superintendent.Mr. Miles will succeed Mr. Daniel Fisher, who will be retiring after 40 years of service to BEA in various capacities, including being the District's superintendent for the past 23 years.
Mr. Miles says, "I am humbled and incredibly honored to be named Superintendent of the Bald Eagle Area School District. I have always been very proud to say I attended and graduated from Bald Eagle Area (Class of 1978). When I think of the Bald Eagle Area Community, I see hard-working, proud people, in a caring and nurturing community. This has not changed in the 47 years since I started in kindergarten. Returning to Bald Eagle Area has been a long-term goal of mine, something I never lost sight of over my last 24 years in education."
Mr. Miles says that he and his wife, Lisa, look forward to moving within our District, as most of his family still lives here and he has many fond memories of growing up in the area.Although his two daughters are currently away attending school at Juniata College and Johns Hopkins University, he says they are both excited about getting back closer to cousins, aunts, uncles, and their grandfather.
Educational Career
Mr. Miles started his educational career at the Huntingdon Area Middle School as a Sixth and Seventh Grade Science teacher, where he became the Dean of Students in September of 2000.He was subsequently named Assistant Principal there in 2001. In the fall of 2003, he moved to the High School. Mr. Miles accepted a position at the Lewistown Area High School as Assistant Principal in 2004. Following three years at Lewistown, he returned to the Huntingdon Area High School as the Assistant Principal and then was appointed Principal, where he has served for the last three-and-one-half years.
Mr. Miles will officially take the position as Bald Eagle Area School District Superintendent effective March 1, 2013.

Holiday Families Project - NHS Says THANKS! |

Thank you to all of those individuals and businesses that helped Bald Eagle Area High School's National Honor Society with their 2012 Holiday Families Project.
Kourtney Vermillion was the student who was the chairperson (or cheer-person as she liked to say) for the Holidays Families Project. Katy Livezey was the chairperson for the Turkey Feathers fundraiser that collected the $1000 for this project. We were able to help 10 local families and 28 children. We couldn't do it without the support of an awesome community and BEA family. Thank you so much and have a wonderful holiday season!

Celebrating Success at Port Matilda Elementary |
An assembly was held on Friday, November 16th in order to celebrate the many accomplishments of our students. We began by recognizing the students who had the highest AR points and/or highest percentage at each grade level for the month of October. Mrs. Gilbert's third grade class accumulated 281.4 points during the month of October (yes-that's the number of points for just one month!).
We then honored the students in each class from grades 3-5 who achieved Honor Roll status. This was particularly exciting for this year's third graders because being able to make the Honor Roll is a new experience for them. Ms. Kenny pointed out that many of the students who were honored for their AR success also made the Honor Roll, proving that reading produces knowledge! We also celebrated the students who had perfect attendance during the first marking period.
Finally, we recognized students for their outstanding behavior so far in the month of November. Between all of the students in the school, they have earned over 1,000 Soaring Eagle tickets throughout the month. Mrs. Mitchell's Kindergarten class earned the highest number of tickets. Many students' tickets were drawn during the assembly and they earned prizes. With this great behavior, the students earned a school-wide reward! |

Middle School students craft Quilts of Valor |
You can learn many things when you make a quilt - our sixth grade students know that now.
Under the guidance of Family & Consumer Science Teacher Sharon Bittel, students took part in a nationwide program to make quilts for our wounded veterans and their families.
Before crafting the quilt, students learned about family heirlooms and special handmade gifts, the historical importance of quilts, and the Freedom Trail during the Civil War. They then used their geometry skills to make the quilt squares, and after sewing the squares together they learned the correct way to layer the backing, the batting, and the top of the quilt.
The students chose to give their quilts to families in our Bald Eagle Area School District who have lost a son while on duty.
Special thanks to Mrs. Kathy Ryba and Mrs. Cathy Fetzer for their help with the Quilts of Valor project. |

Students and their guests walked to the Port Matilda Community Park where they enjoyed lunch and activities together. After lunch everyone returned to the school where they played “Bingo, Bingo, Bingo” for the afternoon. Students, staff, and guests had a wonderful time. The autumn weather cooperated and the day was a success. We would like to thank everyone who participated for making the day so special and sharing it with us. |

Pictured Above - BEA senior Eric Henderson casts his vote.
Bald Eagle Area students had a chance to cast their votes early. On Tuesday, October 31, 80.6% of the total Middle/High School students participated in the National Student Mock Election, most of them during their Social Studies classes, and 89.6% of the Middle School students participated BEA students voted on races for the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and for President of the United States. A polling center was set up in the Large Group Instruction Room in the Middle/High School. Students needed to sign in, by grade, before voting electronically on a laptop. Since the voting took place online, schools were able to compare election results with other participating schools in the state and across the country. Because of power outages due to Hurricane Sandy, the mock election was extended until November 6.

Comprehensive Planning |
The Bald Eagle Area School District is in the process of formulating its Comprehensive Plan. The plan, which is required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to be completed every six years, also includes Academic Standards and Assessment, Student Services and Records, Teacher Induction, Professional Education, and Educational Technology components. With ever-increasing learning standards and graduation requirements, planning is critical if our students are to meet or exceed these standards.
Members of Bald Eagle Area Comprehensive Planning Committee, comprised of students, professional staff (i.e. teachers and guidance counselors), support staff, administrators, board members, parents, community members, and business representatives, are focusing on improving student academic achievement. The thirty-eight members are analyzing factors such as Engagement, Family Support, Instructional Effectiveness, School Climate, and Student Attitude and Beliefs. Strategies and Action Plans are being developed to address these factors that affect student achievement. Bald Eagle Area's completed plan will be submitted to the State during the 2012-2013 school year and implemented by July 1, 2013.

It's Official - BEA Makes AYP |

Congratulations to the BEA students and staff for making AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) during the 2011-12 school year. Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis announced the official PSSA results on September 21. Under requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Law, districts and schools are required to meet specific AYP targets. The AYP student performance targets for the 2011-12 school year were 78 percent proficient and above for math and 81 percent proficient or above for reading.
Math and Reading PSSAs are administered to students in grades 3 through 8 and 11; the Writing PSSA is administered to students in grades 5, 8 and 11; and the Science PSSA is administered to students in grades 4, 8 and 11.
Of the 499 school districts in Pennsylvania that administer the PSSAs, 304, or 60.9 percent, made AYP in 2011-12.

Technology on the Move at BEA |
Pictured Above: Business Education Teachers Amy Smyers (left) and Carri Donmoyer participate in Google Docs training.
BEA's District Technology Committee, comprised of elementary and secondary teachers, building and central office administrators, and members of the BEA community and Board of Education, has been investigating technology uses to make recommendations for short and long term technology goals for the District. Since June, they have been discussing the technology uses of various software and education programs at BEA, and the types of hardware that may be used with the various programs, ranging from PC (Windows) based hardware to Apple Macbooks to iPads for student and teacher use.
An online needs assessment survey of educational technology was recently conducted of BEA staff members to gather information that will be used to help make decisions on what hardware will be purchased.
This past summer, technical personnel from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit reviewed key components of BEA's technology infrastructure including workstation replacement, implementation of I-pads, remote server management and backup strategies, network infrastructure, and staffing and support resources. In addition, a wireless survey was recently performed throughout the entire Wingate Complex to determine the best places for wireless access points.
The Board of Education has also established an ad-hoc committee to focus on the direction that the district will take with regard to technology, including the expansion of wireless coverage in the Middle/High School/Wingate Elementary School buildings, computer hardware (PC or Apple), data security, data back-up options, etc.
The information gathered by these committees will be incorporated into the Technology Plan, which is part of the Comprehensive Plan required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This plan is to be completed by November 2012.

BEA Holds First In-Service Day |
Mountaintop Elementary teacher Sue Pratt enjoys the In-Service Day Buffet Breakfast with guest speaker Nelson Lauver. (More pictures below)
BEA's first In-Service Day began at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, August 20 with the traditional buffet breakfast for all staff, followed by an inspirational talk by award-winning Pennsylvania author Nelson Lauver. Lauver recounted his personal struggles with dyslexia, a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. Mr. Lauver described his difficult school days in the 1960s and 70s, both in elementary and secondary classes, and how he decided to act out with bad behavior to hide his inability to read and write.
He encouraged staff members to "not give up on that kid" who seems uninterested in learning and to recognize that we all learn in different ways. Staff members received his message intently for more than an hour, and then followed with questions.
Bald Eagle Area decided to contract Lauver to present his inspirational story of growing up with dyslexia, after Mountaintop Area third-grade teacher, Sue Pratt, gave Superintendent Dan Fisher a copy of Lauver's award winning memoir to read. Eventually, all members of BEA's administrative staff ended up reading Lauver's book, Most UnLikely to Succeed, and agreed the entire BEA staff should hear his story of determination against seeming insurmountable odds.
Employees, board members, and bus drivers in attendance at the in-service day also celebrated the District making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) by singing a modification to the words of the popular tune "Y.M.C.A.," and changing the letters to "A.Y.P." Afterward, representatives from the United Way and the American Red Cross spoke to the staff and Teacher Association President Vaughn Donmoyer introduced officers for the 2012-13 school year. Superintendent Dan Fisher introduced the new BEA staff members and discussed the challenges of declining enrollment and decreased funding that will face Bald Eagle Area over the next few years. |

Dan Fisher named PA Rural Educator of the Year |
Dan Fisher, Superintendent of the Bald Eagle Area School District, was honored at the 2012 Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools (PARSS) Conference as the Hillman Award
Winner - Pennsylvania Rural Educator of the Year. PARSS is comprised of approximately 180 school districts, 10 intermediate units, and 30 business associate members. Its mission is to work for the attainment of quality education and equal educational opportunity for all students in every public school in Pennsylvania.
To be nominated for the award, a candidate must have made significant contributions to the quality of rural education and improved student learning opportunities. In his introductory remarks a t the awards ceremony held at the Ramada Conference Center in State College on April 26, Arnold Hillman, one of PARSS founding members and former recipient for whom the award was named, called Fisher a "straight arrow."
Living in the Bald Eagle Area his entire life, Fisher has also given just about his entire professional life to the district. He has been an integral part of Bald Eagle Area since he served as President of the BEA Class of 1964. After completing post-secondary studies and a stint in the Navy, he returned to his Alma Mater as a social studies teacher, and also held the positions of Assistant High School Principal, Athletic Director, Business Manager, and Assistant Superintendent before becoming Superintendent, a post he has served in for the past 22 years.
During that time period, Reading Recovery, FOSS Science, Everyday Mathematics, an elementary Spanish program, and the Bald Eagle Area Cyber Academy have been implemented in the district. An environmental center has been built, an alumni association formed, an artificial turf field with six-lane track installed, and an independent living center put into place for use by special needs students. In addition, a twenty-six-million dollar renovation has recently been completed at the Wingate Complex, as well as installation of geothermal HVAC systems at the Wingate Complex and at the Mountaintop Area Elementary School. The District recently earned the 2012 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence for its environmental initiatives.
Many BEA board and administration members were on
hand for the awards ceremony, including Fisher's wife, Jane, and their son, Matthew - who is following in his father's footsteps as an educator in the Red Lion Area School District.
Fisher said, "At Bald Eagle Area, we truly 'teach for success' and I am proud to have been a small part of the legacy."

Wingate Elementary Students Earn FUN! |
We all know that academics are the most important part of our school day at Wingate Elementary. While we know how important completing our school work is, we also want students to learn about how hard work sometimes can have a fun pay-off. We asked for help with this from the wonderful teachers at Wingate Elementary and they delivered!
Many staff members in the building received an email with a wide list of simple classroom jobs. They chose a job that one of our students could complete either daily, weekly or a few times a week. Our students earned play "money" for completing each job. As a group the students were working toward a fun field trip. The students raised $100 for a bowling trip to Bellefonte Lanes, and they earned another $50 for a shopping trip to Wal-Mart to buy ingredients for a spaghetti and meatballs dinner. After purchasing the ingredients, the meal was cooked in the Independent Living Center, which is located across the street from Wingate Elementary. This meal included the main dish, bread, salad and of course dessert!
The students really enjoyed the experiences and have worked extremely hard in order to gain the rewards. The students have learned social skills, independent living skills, how to follow a schedule, as well as how to appropriately communicate with peers and adults. We feel these are important tools needed to be successful in life and have no doubt these students will be very successful! (See more photos below.)

Mountaintop Elementary helps Food Bank |
The Mountaintop Area Food Bank received a welcome donation of 1,700 pounds of food from the students at the Mountaintop Area Elementary School in February. When the food drive was initiated, the goal was 1,000 pounds. But at the end of the five-week food drive, the total collected was 1,700 pounds, with the second-grade students contributing a grade-level winning 433 pounds. The food drive was part of the School-Wide Positive Behavior Program to promote community service. Elementary students, each carrying a few items, walked from the school to the food bank, located at the Snow Show United Methodist Church, to deliver the food. The group was followed by a pickup truck that was heaped with the rest of the food.
