As we begin another school year at Bald Eagle Area, there are many things to make you aware of so that you will be able to support your child’s education. I encourage you and your family to start the year off right by calendaring the following important dates.

Port Elementary “Back to School” night Wednesday, September 14, 2015 (6:00-7:00).

First Day of School is Monday, August 29th.

Please contact us about morning and after school programs for your child.

Attendance: One of the challenges that schools face has to do with attendance and excessive tardies. Regular attendance is essential for student learning and progress. You are encouraged to coordinate your family

vacations when school is not in session. Students lose out on critical instruction when they are absent or are not in school for the entire day. Therefore, late arrivals and early dismissals are highly discouraged. We request that medical and dental appointments be scheduled after school hours, if at all possible. If students are ill and unable to attend school, please notify our office the morning of the absence and send a note with your child. The school attendance officer may become involved if attendance problems occur.

* The School handbook may be consulted for further attendance information for clarification.

P.T.O We have a very dedicated and enthusiastic Parent Teacher Organization that goes above and beyond to support our educational programs and enhance student education. Mrs. Carrie Sharkey is the PTO president for this school year and will be encouraging your participation as a P.T.O member. There will be information available at the “Back To School” night on ways you can help our students at Port Matilda Elementary.

Student Nutrition: School lunch cost is $2.30 for elementary students. Reduced price is $.40. Breakfast for a student is $ 1.10 and reduced price is $.30. Milk is $.50. Lunch balances must be kept current. You will be able to pay for lunches in advance or daily as needed. Please make checks payable to Bald Eagle School.

Free and Reduced Lunch Packet Materials

We are especially encouraging all Port Matilda Elementary families to submit a confidential application for free and reduced price meals for the 2016 – 2017 school year. If enough families are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch, Port Matilda Elementary may receive additional Federal funding to help support student achievement. This additional funding may be available whether or not your child chooses to use the free or reduced price meal benefits, but in order for us to receive the funding, your completed form must be returned. Please contact the office if you have further

Parking Lot Safety: Student safety is a high priority at Port Matilda Elementary. To further ensure safety, the driveway at the front of the school is quite busy in the morning as well as during dismissal. Please drive slowly and look for children walking or riding bicycles. Please avoid leaving your car parked and unattended in front of the building. If you need to speak with a teacher or have other school business, please park in the parking lot and come into the school.

**Please drive slow and proceed with caution through the school parking lot at all times. Thank you.

Please note that BALD EAGLE AREA SCHOOLS will not be sending home student handbooks. Instead, parents and students are encouraged to go online to the Bald Eagle Area School District webpage, click “Schools”, and then click “Port Matilda Elementary” to access the school’s website. On our school webpage you will be able to read with your child all about each school policy and other important information at your convenience. If ever you have a questions about the website, please call the school. We are happy to help.

Each teacher also has a website on our Port Matilda site that will address specific grade level information on homework, assessments, activities and special events. Please call or email your child’s teacher any time you need information.

Our Facebook page also shares photos and news events that are always updating. This is a fun site for parents and students to see.

I look forward to seeing you on September 14th for “Back to School” night. I am so proud to be your principal at Port Matilda School and look forward to working together to make your child be the best they can be at BEA!
